This report offers an overview of the technical interoperability standards applicable to synchrophasor technology and substation automation, with a principal focus on IEC 61850, the substation automation standard. The IEC, International Electrotechnical Commission, is the worlds leading organization that prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. 2 Synchrophasor communications are addressed in IEC 61850-90-5 , which was adopted in 2012. But it is important to understand the broader framework established in the suite of IEC 61850 standards to understand and use the synchrophasor-specific standard effectively.
