In October 2013, after a critical 500 kV line between Arizona and California tripped and locked out, standard operating procedures would have resulted in a long delay to restore it to service without risking damage to other equipment. Information from newly installed synchrophasors informed the system operator that the line could be re-energized safely. This rapid restoration avoided re-dispatching generation and reduced the grids vulnerability to additional contingencies.
