The Smart Grid Computational Tool is a Microsoft Excel based application that was funded by DOE Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) and developed by Navigant Consulting. This tool is used for identifying and quantifying smart grid project benefits. The Smart Grid Computational Tool employs the benefit analysis methodology that DOE uses to evaluate the Recovery Act smart grid projects.

How it works:

  • The Smart Grid Computational Tool characterizes smart grid projects by identifying the technologies that will be installed and identifying the technologies’ functions.
  • Based on this characterization, the tool identifies the economic, reliability, environmental and security benefits the smart grid project will yield.
  • The Smart Grid Computational Tool guides the user in entering data required for calculating the monetary value of smart grid benefits.
  • The tool prepares graphs and tables that summarize the costs and benefits of the project to help illustrate the project’s overall value.
